Von Buren Contemporary presents
THREADS
featuring the works of
Caterina Giglio
Lau_Lana
Von Buren Contemporary is delighted to present Threads, the duo exhibition of Italian artists Caterina Giglio and Lau_Lana.
Threads is an emblematic title for the exhibition: while Caterina Giglio’s intricate drawings and paintings resemble tangled cobwebs filled with threads, Lau_Lana’s canvases are created through the manual weaving of woolen threads. By juxtaposing the two artists, the exhibition creates a further connection, revealing a path where the two meet.
Caterina Giglio’s incredibly dense and detailed pen-and-ink drawings and mixed media artworks are composed of myriads of fairytale figures – human and non-human. Her works possess a frenetic, high-energy and obsessive quality, combined with a powerful, dreamlike aura that harks back to the fantastical world of Victorian illustrator Aubrey Beardsley.
Lau_Lana’s embroidered, wool-on-linen canvases, meanwhile, focus on female figures captured in almost photographic shots. Worked in bright coloured wool, Lau_Lana’s creations depict contemporary beach scenes but also experiment with close-ups of clothed torsos which link back to an earlier interest of the artist in fashion and design.
Caterina Giglio was born in Rome in 1970. Her artistic vitality is multifaceted: she worked for eleven years in the theatre as an actress, costume designer and set designer. At the same time, she dedicated herself to the theme of creative recycling, transforming vintage objects into unique works of art. Since 2016, she has focused mainly on painting and drawing and in 2024, a retrospective of her work was held at Rome’s prestigious Palazzo Velli.
Giglio’s works are populated by powerful female figures, representing symbols of sensuality, motherhood, wisdom and acceptance. She creates a fluid and universal world, made of corporeal forms that stretch toward the sky like trees and which blossom and transform within a never-ending, Matisse-like dance.
Lau_Lana was born in Jesolo near Venice in 1998 and originally studied fashion. Taught to embroider as a child by her grandmother, Lau_Lana soon realised that this ancient craft was her true passion in life.
Taking inspiration from the seaside town that she grew up in, she began ‘painting’ with wool thread on canvas, recreating beach scenes where the colours, patterns and intricacies of bathing costumes, deck chairs and towels dominated the picture. Her strong connection to her home region and the special attention she pays to women provide rich material for Lau_Lana as she transforms craftsmanship into art.
