FULL CIRCLE

The title FULL CIRCLE is peculiarly fitting for the work of Sicilian artist Nicola Pucci.

In immediate, literal terms, the circle is a recurrent visual theme in Pucci’s paintings. From the older series Lettura Quotidiana (Daily Reading), where each man is ironically intent on stealing a look at the next man’s newspaper, to the latest Tuffatori (The Divers), where rings of men in swimming trunks launch themselves into unlikely space, the circle acts as an element of continuity.

But ‘to come full circle’ as an English expression means to complete a cycle of transition, returning to where one started after gaining experience and maturity. In this sense, Pucci’s re-visitation of the circle theme allows us to see the maturing of his personal style over a period of seven years.

On a wider level, it could be said that Pucci’s virtuoso technique takes the viewer full circle, bypassing recent trends in contemporary art and putting the emphasis back on traditional painting skills, where technical mastery re-emerges alongside ideas as a criteria on which to judge a work of art.
