Von Buren Contemporary is proud to present Solo con me stesso (Alone with myself), the solo show of young Italian talent Matteo Casali.
The fruit of two years’ work, most of it spent in isolation due to lockdown, Casali focuses on the human figure, typically portrayed in a domestic setting. Using as his starting point photographs of family members and close friends, the artist creates intimate yet estranged images of his subjects. Casali uses the landscape of the home to underscore the dominant mood of alienation and loneliness.
Matteo Casali was born in Schio in northern Italy in 1994 and recently completed his degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice where he lives and works. Casali uses principally oil and acrylic on canvas. His bold, startling style clearly draws on the influence of Francis Bacon as well as the Nordic Expressionists.
The 28-year-old Casali has already held a number of exhibitions that have brought him to the attention of art critics and galleries across the country. He has won several prizes for his work and his latest painting to be awarded, Abbraccio a distanza, is included in this exhibition.
